Tranquillis was likely martyred during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The Roman Emperor Diocletian (r. 284-305) was severely anti-Christian and persecuted the Church and the early Christians. Many saints were martyred during this time and suffered greatly for their faith. Modern historians estimate that between 3,000 and 3,500 Christians were martyred during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.
